2pm

All four grandparents got up from the kitchen table, moving slowly like a herd of cattle and following the insistence of Holly’s mother to walk with her upstairs to Holly’s bedroom to see the lighthouse print bedsheets.

Holly did all she could to protest. This was not going to end well. There was no way this could end well. Her bedroom was now a nursery and she had no ability at all to explain how it had happened. On top of all of that, but to a much lesser degree of severity, her lighthouse print bedsheets were gone - replaced with the pink ones that covered her crib mattress. And geez! There wasn’t even a bed in that room anymore!

“Mom, maybe we can show them later,” Holly said, waddling past her grandparents and up to her mother quickly.

Her mother stopped the migration across the living room and turned back to her daughter - staring down at her daughter’s waist. Holly froze in place. Her mother had heard the crinkle. Gulp!

“Mom, I didn’t make my bed,” Holly said, lowering her chin as her mother raised an eyebrow at her.

“I’m not surprised,” her mother said with monotone quality and a condescending glare. “But I’m going to show them the bedsheets any way. So stop interfering.”

Holly sighed, pouty tears welling up in her eyes as she folded her arms and stepped out of the way for her grandparents to pass by. Gramma Gigi smiled warmly as she looked at her granddaughter’s outfit. Holly did indeed look as adorable in the clothing as she did twenty years ago - complete with a thickness at her waist that seemed out of place with the rest of her frame while at the same time seeming perfect to be there.

With her lower lip sticking out, Holly waddled over to the base of the stairs - having given up in preventing them from going upstairs to see her misplaced lighthouse print bedsheets. But while standing at the base of the staircase, her panic returned yet again as she saw all four grandparents beginning to make their way up to the second floor.

Forget the missing lighthouse bedsheets. Her bedroom was now a nursery!

“Hey Mom, I just remembered. I think I put those bedsheets in the wash!” Holly called up to her mother, in the hopes that some sort of miracle would make everyone turned around and come back downstairs.

“There’s nothing in the laundry room, Holly. I’ve already checked,” her mother said, getting up to the top of the staircase and turning around to look back down at Holly. “Besides, I’d be amazed if you actually washed your bedsheets.”

Oh, that hurt - not so much for her mother having said something mean, but more so for the fact that her mother couldn’t recognize that Holly was trying to keep her grandparents out of the bedroom. Her mother could pick up on a lot of things about her without having to have anything explained. But she couldn’t pick up on this. And Holly believed it was deliberate.
